Der Weg von Jindabayne nach Foster fuehrte uns durchs Outback, durch Teile des Tropischen Regenwaldes, durch die Alpenregion Snowy River, entlang an unzaehligen Kuestenabschnitten und durch riessige Cattlefarmgebiete. Der Plan fuer Jindabayne war das wir (Alex, Georg und ich) in drei Tagen den hoechsten Berg Australiens besteigen und zwei Naechte auf dem Berg verbringen sollten. Am Morgen unseres Trips sind wir dann noch kurz in die Touristeninformation um Kartenmaterial zu holen. Der zustaendige Ranger teilte uns dann aber leider mit, dass der komplette Nationalpark gesperrt ist und gerade das Nachbardorf Thredbo evakuiert wird (siehe Newsauschnitt unten).

Rain may quell Thredbo bushfire threat (Thursday, 18 January 2007, Launceston news)

Firefighters battling a blaze near Thredbo are pinning their hopes on rain stopping the fire from reaching the NSW ski resort town within the next 24 hours. The out-of-control blaze which crossed the Victorian border on Wednesday, and which has scorched 2,100 hectares of NSW bushland, was burning just 12km from the township on Thursday night. Dry, hot and windy conditions have been forecast for Saturday, prompting the Rural Fire Service (RFS) to warn that the fire could reach Thredbo within 24 hours. The same conditions were forecast for Sunday but the Bureau of Meteorology said it now expects "a substantial rain band" to arrive as early as Saturday night. "Every computer model we get (from around the world) is suggesting rain," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Neale Fraser said. "If that happens, the rain will dampen the wind (expected for Saturday) and it couldn't occur on a better day." The bushfire on Wednesday forced the evacuation of 700 visitors from the summer camping and trekking destination - four years to the day since the town's last bushfire-related evacuation. RFS spokesman Cameron Wade said the mild conditions should allow fire crews to fight the 12km-long fire front "head on" but that the steep alpine country ruled out the use of bulldozers and minimised the ability to backburn.

Somit mussten wir unseren Trip absagen und mit dem Bus weiter nach Bairnsdale fahren. Nach einem kurzen Stop am Snowy River sind wir dann gegen Abend an einem Budistentempel in den Bergen von Gipsland angekommen. Auf dem Programm stand eine kleine Einfuehrung in die Kunst der Meditation an. Diese hat uns auf Anhieb so gut gefallen, dass wir am folgenden Morgen um 6 Uhr an einer weiteren teilgenommen haben. Nach dem Fruehstueck ging es dann via 90 Mile Baech weiter nach Foster wo unser naechstes Abenteuer starten sollte.
